A horizontal surface, a place of public expression, a raised area
- partial definition of a platform
Last week fellow Guerrilla Marketing Coach Richard Balius asked me evaluate a marketing plan he was recommending to a client; the plan's platform was a blog associated with the client's board position in an association.
Experts insist a platform from which to market your business is likely the difference between success and failure. Consequently, expert marketer Michael Hyatt insists "the easiest way to build a platform in today's world is to start a blog."
I've been interviewing business owners and salespeople at a local business networking event the past 7 weeks. The interview questions are focused specifically around the 8 Step Marketing Plan. My purpose of the interviews have been three-fold:
1. to give the Interviewee additional exposure to the 30-40 attendees,
2. to give me better insight into how others engage in the thought process associated with a marketing plan, and
3. teach the 8 Step Marketing and Action Plan
So far, of the Top 10 Most Impactful Market-Smarter-Not-Harder Weapons, blogging is being used the least.
Results don't lie and blogging can make the difference between working hard and marketing-smart. Attending networking meetings, happy hours, chamber events and one-to-one meetings is hard work. It's good marketing, but typically hard.
Be smart about your work and market-smart by extending those face-to-face meetings. Blogging builds on relationships when those you've met can read more about you, your product/service on your blog, and/or what you like to write about.
You can Google what, when and where to blog, but...keep it simple at first. As to the how, you can learn in minutes. Here are a couple suggestions......
- Blogger In 7 Minutes, by me (part of the upcoming Market-Smarter-Not-Harder series)
- How to Launch a Self-Hosted Wordpress Blog in 20 Minutes or Less, by Michael Hyatt
To make a point I just Googled "blogging" and on the first page was a post by friend and colleague Hurdie Burk's "Something I need to work on" - HubSpot's Free eBook: An Intro to Business Blogging.
To that end.......Blogging is one of those areas that's "worth doing poorly until you can do it well."
