Conflict Resolution: 5 Typical Phases of Conflict

We'll be writing on and off in the coming weeks about Conflict, its causes, its steps to resolution, etc.

It should be noted at the very outset that a conflict is not necessarily bad or destructive. Conflict can be an explicit way to resolve tensions between parties, prevent stagnation, stimulate interest and curiosity; it can be the medium "through which problems can be aired and solutions arrived at.

For that matter, conflict can be the root of personal and social change.

But for now...the 5 Typical Phases of Conflict -
  1. Anticipation - you know its coming
  2. Conscious / Unexpressed - word leaks out
  3. Discussion - search for info / start to talk
  4. Open dispute - arguing / picking sides
  5. Open Conflict - positional / win-lose
"The opportunity for successful intervention differs greatly in each stage."

Brad Thomas, pastor at Austin Ridge Bible Church, gives the following advice for dealing with conflict -
  1. respond, don't react
  2. go to the person
  3. expect the best
I'll add...."seek clarity / ask questions, treat the event / not the person and talk straight / leave the right impression."

Conflict Resolution Happens..One Way or Another

A complete absence of conflict is not harmony, it is APATHY!

Unknown

I've been in many situations where people just wanted to get through "it" without conflict. Invariably, there were problems that weren't discussed. As Patrick Lincioni states in his book of the same title, there's always Politics, Silos, and Turfwars. Well, maybe he didn't say always, but there are always IF you aren't having conflict.

What makes us think, this culture we live in, that all conflict is bad and must be avoided? Conflict will happen when there are -
  • a lack of resources
  • frustration with people, systems or processes
  • red tape (simplistic for bureaucratic procedures
  • unfair treatment (of course, we can argue "fair")
  • jealousy shown with favoritism

Learning how to have good conflict takes time and training. You need to learn things like -
  • knowing not the existence of conflict but how to handle it
  • what is your purpose? What outcome do you hope to achieve?
  • 4 fundamental issues of conflict (facts, goals, methods and values)
  • 5 phases of conflict (anticipation, conscious, discussion, open dispute and open conflict

Obviously there is a lot more about conflict resolution you need to learn to be an effective manager, but you MUST learn proper conflict resolutin to ever become anything more than a Level 1/Position Leader.
